CES 2026: Robots take center stage as 'physical AI' becomes key theme

'CES 2026' 공식 개막 '피지컬 AI' 격전 전망

CES 2026 officially kicked off today.
The buzzword at this year's CES is undoubtedly "Physical AI" marking a shift from generative software to intelligence embedded in hardware.
Our Kim Do-yeon takes us to the Las Vegas Convention Center for a closer look.

Meet Atlas.
Hyundai Motor Group's Boston Dynamics unveiled this humanoid robot to kick off CES 2026.
It drew attention as it resembles the body of a human being, but its limbs move much more freely.
The carmaker is focusing on robots specifically Physical AI as the next chapter of its business.

"Robots equipped with physical AI. Robots that perceive the world like we do and work responsibly for us and with us. This is technology that is built for humanity. Technology that supports us, extends our capabilities, makes our work safer, and in some cases, more meaningful."

And Hyundai also won the Best of Innovation award with its MobED.
The autonomous one can deliver items up to 47 kilograms.
Another key Korean company in physical AI is Doosan Robotics.
Together with Maple Advanced Robotics Inc., its Scan and Go robot won awards in both AI and robotics the definition of physical AI.
It moves autonomously and scans surfaces to identify areas that need work.
Here is how the company explained the technology.

"So what we're accomplishing with our physical AI is we're giving the ability for the robots to see, think and act. So the Robot is able to see with our 3D vision. So just like a person it would, it's able to take a decision based on the meaningful Robot movement with our physical AI that's embedded into the system and finally do the work."

And this robot by the company is for sorting out parcels and organizing storage.

"I'm going to put in arirangTV.
Now this robot finds the blocks with the correct letters and completes the word."

And here at CES because Physical AI requires complex hardware component makers are also gaining attention, including companies that make the sensors or develop AI software to process data.
I spoke to one company that provides the LiDAR sensors for robots and vehicles.
After attending C-E-S for a decade in smaller booths the company finally secured a booth on the main show floor this year citing the rise of Physical AI as perfect timing.

"Beyond existing cameras, actually capturing 3D spatial data I believe LiDAR is the new core of the Physical AI era. In that sense, as a core sensor for Physical AI, it is truly an honor and great to be able to exhibit right here in the center of the show."

As for South Korean companies while "Physical AI" is not yet a standalone award category six South Korean companies were explicitly identified as winners in the Robotics category or for robotic solutions centered on this new technology.

Squid dishes over Squid Game: Korea's loved seafood is coming back to East Sea

동해에서 오징어 어획량 증가, 물회도 다시 판매

Koreans love for squid is evident in that, one, there's a game named after it and two, there are loads of different dishes made with squid.
Stir-fried, steamed, and even served raw it's one of Korea's most sought-after seafoods.
But for the past few years, it's been hard to get a hold of.
This year, there's been full tanks on a daily basis.
Our Kim Do-yeon went to see the freshest catch.

Many will know that Squid Game season 3 is coming this week, but what many might not know yet, is that squid has also made a comeback this year.
And it's here at Jumunjin Port where it's the most evident.
With the break of dawn arriving are boats that spent over night in the waters catching one of Korea's most beloved seafoods.
And with their arrival begins not a Squid Game of survival but a real game of livelihood survival.

"RING RING RING"

It's the daily auction for live squid as retailers and restaurant owners compete for their supply.
The process is simple: they write down their offers after hearing the catch volume.
Each lot is sold in bundles of 20.
And soon, the winners are called.

"Number 15, 14 boxes for 59,000 each. Number 31, 13 boxes for 58,200"

The system isn’t new — but what is new this year is the squid.
After five years of declining catch volumes, things have turned around —
especially since June, when the permitted fishing season began.
As of mid-June, Gangwon-do Province had caught 875 tons of squid — a 276 percent increase from the same period last year, and well above the three-year average.
That translates to over 81.8 billion won in squid sold so far this year or about 60.5 million U.S. dollars compared to 74.3 billion last year, despite last year having only a third of this year's catch.
One bidder explains the price shift:

"I won my batch with around 60,000 won bid today. This is about a third of last year's price."

The price they're sold daily at ports like this one will be reflected for regular consumers.

"Once the auction wraps up, the live squid are distributed quickly for the winning bidders each placed into the fish tank for shipment across the country."

Increased volume means much more than just to the ones in the squid business.

“With squid coming in after years of scarcity, it’s good for everyone — not just sellers, but also the people who sell ice, boxes everyone makes a living off this.”

Meanwhile, the city of Gangneung has a specialty as it's the core of squid fishing.
Raw squid dishes, especially squid moolhwe a cold spicy soup dish is a specialty.

"When we didn't have any squid, we had to give up on them and use flounder instead. But, with the increased supply, customers are now looking for squid moolhwe this year."

While Squid Game comes back with an anticipation to top the streaming charts squid dishes are already back and topping tables.

Rep. Andy Kim says S. Korea, U.S. 'together, no matter what'

미 하원 앤디킴, "미국은 절대 한국이 안보공백에 노출되지 않게 할 것"

Following President Yoon's state visit to the U.S.
We hear from Andy Kim -- a U.S. Congressman with Korean ancestry --on what he has to say about the South Korea-U.S. alliance going beyond the executive branches of the two countries.
Our Kim Do-yeon sat down with him.

U.S. diplomat-turned-lawmaker Andy Kim says South Korea and the United States are in it together, no matter what happens, as the two countries mark the 70th year of their bilateral alliance.
Speaking to Arirang News following President Yoon Suk Yeol and Joe Biden’s summit last week, Kim stressed that the summit proved Washington is committed to working with Seoul in various strategic areas.

"Anything that happens, happens together. There's going to be that consultation and we can absolutely have assurances that we will never leave South Korea exposed and vulnerable. That's part of what this was all about. We have strategic interest in South Korea as a whole, and that's something that we're going to protect."

Kim also said that two leaders showing a "embedded relationship," and that level of engagement will help the two get through global conflicts that two countries may face in the future.
He also added the alliance goes beyond just the two presidents, and that there's a bipartisan support at U.S. Congress, which plays a key role in the alliance as well.
In fact, at the U.S. Senate, while President Yoon was in Washington, a resolution was unanimously passed, which welcomed the state visit by President Yoon and highlighted the importance of the U.S.-Korea alliance.

"I also recognize that you gotta have the resources and that deeper commitment, and that's what comes with the U.S. Congress, and that's why it was so important that we have that joint session an opportunity for all of us in Congress to come together and recognize and support the alliance."

In light of the U.S. observance of AAPI month in May, Kim also shed light on his role as a Korean American and also an Asian American in the legislative branch.
There are currently four members of the House with Korean ancestry, evenly split between the Democrats and Republicans.

"When we see right now rising discrimination and violence against the Asian American community you can't guarantee that the government is going to focus on that. It helps to have the people that understand you experiences and challenges in certain communities and background."

Kim further highlighted the role of Asian Americans as a bridge in the global community in times of high geopolitical tensions.

“When we're focused on these issues about foreign policy about having increased action towards Indo-Pacific, we have tensions and challenges between us and China, it's good to have Asian Americans be able to be people that not only understand the nuances here in America but could also potentially be a bridge in helping us engage in the rest of the world too."

Calling South Korea a "top-tier" world power, Kim also expressed hope that South Korea will continue to step up not only as a regional leader but a global pivotal state.
